A Nigerian student-athlete, Israel Osamudiame Friday, has died suddenly while training with his team at the University of the Philippines (UP).
Local reports said the 19-year-old collapsed during a basketball practice session on Tuesday, August 19, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He would have turned 20 on September 6.
In a statement published by Filipino outlet Spin.ph, Bo Perasol, Director of the UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development, confirmed the incident.
“UP is heartbroken to confirm that one of our newest recruits, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice yesterday. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he passed away,” Perasol said.
Friday, a 6-foot-10 forward from Abuja, Nigeria, had recently transferred from Centro Escolar University (CEU), where he played for the Scorpions in the Universities and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL). He was considered one of UP’s most promising recruits and was expected to become eligible to play in UAAP Season 89 after completing a one-year residency.
Witnesses said he was actively participating in team drills at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman when he suddenly collapsed. Team therapists attempted first aid before he was taken to hospital, but doctors could not revive him.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, as medical examinations are ongoing.
Perasol said the university community is devastated and has pledged support to the player’s family.
“UP is in close contact with his family and is extending its full support during this difficult time. The university asks everyone to respect their privacy as they grieve this tragic loss,” he added.
Friday was widely regarded as one of the brightest young frontcourt prospects in Philippine collegiate basketball, with his size, athleticism, and potential seen as vital to UP’s future campaigns.
