Electricity Theft Worse Than Kidnapping – BEDC Sparks Controversy

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has stirred reactions online after declaring that electricity theft is more serious than kidnapping.

The statement was made via the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, where it wrote:

“Person wey dey bypass light, worse pass kidnapper. You will soon understand why.”

The remark, delivered in Pidgin English, has drawn widespread attention and debate over the comparison.

This comes months after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) increased penalties for energy theft, slamming offenders with fines ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦300,000 as part of its February 2025 enforcement directive.
