Ex-NFL star Buster Skrine arrested one year after fleeing fraud charges

Former NFL player Darryl “Buster” Skrine has been arrested on 18 counts linked to allegedly exploiting women financially.

The 36-year-old was booked on several charges, including deposit account fraud, identity fraud, financial transaction card fraud, theft by taking, and attempted theft.

This arrest comes more than a year after Skrine was declared a fugitive in Canada on similar allegations.

According to Roswell, Georgia police, the former cornerback allegedly targeted women on online dating platforms, convincing them to send him money by claiming financial hardship and promising repayment from his NFL annuity.

Investigators say Skrine instead used the funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle, covering Airbnbs, travel, and gift cards. So far, three victims have been identified in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New York, with reported losses of around $300,000. Authorities believe more victims may be spread across the country, and the investigation is ongoing.

Skrine has also been wanted in Canada since May 2024, when officials alleged he skipped a court date in a fraud case and removed his GPS monitor. He was previously arrested at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport in August 2023 on fraud-related charges, accused of depositing fraudulent checks and withdrawing $100,000.

Although released on bail with a GPS tracking condition, Skrine later failed to appear in court, and his monitor went offline.

Roswell police confirmed they are coordinating with Canadian authorities to ensure he faces charges in both countries.

Drafted in the fifth round out of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2011, Skrine played 11 NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans. He retired in 2022 after earning an estimated $40 million during his career, last playing in the NFL in 2021 with the Titans.
