The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oyo State will deploy 2,062 polling officials and 574 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines for Saturday’s by-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
Speaking at a press briefing after candidates signed a Peace Accord at INEC’s Collaboration Centre in Agodi, Ibadan, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Adeniran Rahmon Tella, said the poll will cover 512 polling units across 12 wards, with 272,196 registered voters eligible to participate. Of these, 217,980 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Tella explained that 526 BVAS machines have been configured for the exercise, with 48 additional units kept as backup. Voting will take place in areas including Sango/Eleyele/Apete/Ijokodo, Beere/Oje/Odoye, Mokola/Adamasingba, UI/Agbowo, and Gate/Basorun/Ashi.
Abiodun Warns Against Violence in Ogun By-Election
Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has warned that his administration will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt Saturday’s by-election in the Remo Federal Constituency.
Speaking at an APC campaign rally in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, Abiodun stressed that the exercise is not a war but an opportunity to elect a replacement for the late Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the constituency’s former representative in the House of Representatives.
“I have heard that some people are issuing threats; this is not a threat we will take lightly. Anyone who causes trouble on Saturday will be dealt with,” the governor warned.
Peter Obi Endorses Widow for Onitsha North Assembly Seat
In Anambra State, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has endorsed Mrs. Justina Azuka, widow of the late Justice Azuka who was killed by kidnappers, for the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the State House of Assembly.
Obi, in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, described Azuka as “a woman of strength, resilience, and commitment to serve,” praising her decision to complete the remaining 13 months of her late husband’s tenure.
The 33-year-old mother of three holds an HND in Public Administration. Obi said her candidacy embodies both competence and compassion, values he believes a “new Nigeria” should embrace.
“Leadership without compassion is meaningless. Supporting her is both an investment in competent representation and a collective act of solidarity to help ease the burden of her loss,” Obi said.
