The staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have announced an indefinite strike effective immediately, citing unresolved issues with the university management.
The Joint Action Committee—comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)—issued the strike notice in a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.
The letter, signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare, ASUU-LASU Secretary Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu, SSANU-LASU Chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal, and SSANU-LASU Secretary Waheed Majekodunmi, was obtained by our correspondent on Friday.
The statement directs all university staff, including those at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Epe campus, to immediately withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts.
The communiqué reads:
“Following the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of LASU Staff Unions (ASUU, SSANU, NAAT, NASU), it has been resolved that an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION shall commence effective Thursday, July 31, 2025. We hereby notify you that the strike has commenced.
“This action will continue INDEFINITELY until all the demands of the staff are satisfactorily addressed by the relevant authorities.
“All staff members of the university and its affiliate campuses (LASUCOM and Epe campus) are hereby directed to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts immediately.
“We appreciate your continued support and understanding. Kindly accept the unions’ warm regards.”
Meanwhile, reports indicate that LASU students were scheduled to begin their 2024/2025 second semester examinations next Monday.
