Police Edge NDLEA on Penalties to Win Unity Cup in Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command emerged champions of the maiden Inter-Security Agencies Unity Cup after defeating the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in a tense penalty shootout on Saturday.

The final match, held at the Pantami Township Stadium, brought the week-long football tournament to an exciting close. Designed to foster collaboration, teamwork, and synergy among security formations in the state, the competition saw spirited performances from participating agencies.

The final clash between the Nigeria Police Force and NDLEA ended in a dramatic penalty decider, with the Police clinching a 5–4 victory.

The well-attended event drew a diverse crowd of spectators, including top government officials, uniformed personnel, and members of the public—all united by the theme of peace and cooperation.

Representing the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, at the final match and award ceremony was Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau. Other dignitaries included the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Njodi; the Chief of Staff; the Commissioner for Internal Security and Ethical Orientation; various commissioners; and heads of security agencies.

Governor Yahaya, through his representative, emphasized that the Unity Cup extended beyond sports, describing it as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to strengthening bonds among security outfits.

“This initiative reflects our shared vision for a safer and more united Gombe,” he said. “We are considering forming and registering a permanent Gombe Security Football Team to symbolize this inter-agency cooperation.”

In his remarks, Commissioner of Police CP Bello Yahaya commended all participating agencies for their conduct and teamwork.

“The Unity Cup is more than a football tournament—it’s a symbol of unity and a shared mission,” he stated. “The discipline, sportsmanship, and dedication on display show the strength of our collective effort in ensuring security. Physical fitness, cooperation, and respect are crucial to effective policing.”

Trophies and medals were awarded to the winning team and outstanding players, capping off an event that celebrated excellence, unity, and camaraderie across Gombe’s security sector.
