Senate to Investigate Airline–Passenger Clashes

The Senate Committee on Aviation has pledged to investigate recent high-profile altercations between airline operators and passengers in Nigeria, incidents that have stirred public outrage.

One case involved veteran fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, who last week allegedly blocked an aircraft from taking off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Another occurred on Sunday aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos, where passenger Comfort Emmanson was forcibly removed after allegedly refusing to switch off her phone. A viral video showed her slapping a female flight attendant who insisted on compliance with safety regulations.

In a statement on Tuesday, Committee Chairman Buhari Abdulfatai described the incidents as “too dangerous for silence,” stressing that they demanded immediate action to protect the aviation sector’s integrity and restore public confidence.

“Exercising its constitutional mandate, the committee will engage regulators, airline operators, security agencies, and public interest groups to establish the facts, review existing procedures, and swiftly implement any necessary corrective measures,” he said.

Abdulfatai warned that lapses in enforcement or procedural gaps would not be allowed to compromise safety, professionalism, or public trust in the aviation system.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and vowed to ensure accountability at all levels to prevent future occurrences.
