US sprinter and Olympic silver medalist Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended for an anti-doping violation, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old athlete faces charges for missing doping tests, which under the World Anti-Doping Code, occur when an athlete accumulates three missed tests or filing failures within a 12-month period.
Kerley’s legal team has stated that he intends to contest the allegation. “Fred Kerley strongly believes that one or more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent, or because the doping control officer did not take reasonable steps to locate him at his designated location,” the statement read.
The statement emphasized that Kerley has formally notified the AIU of his intent to challenge the charges and that he will “not comment further at this time out of respect for the process,” adding that he looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel.
Kerley, who won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, is also a two-time World Championships relay gold medalist in addition to his individual accolades.
