A tragic incident occurred in the Idumoza community of Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, as a hotel under construction collapsed, resulting in the death of its owner, identified as Harrison Isesere.
The building reportedly came down on Friday, August 1, 2025, while Isesere was inside the structure. Eyewitnesses said over 20 workers who were also on-site narrowly escaped with their lives.
Rescue efforts continued over the weekend, and Isesere’s body was finally recovered from the rubble on Sunday morning.
According to local residents, concerns had previously been raised about the quality of materials used during construction. One neighbour, Andrew Inegbebor, told journalists: “The owner was warned about using substandard materials. He used 12mm rods instead of 16mm for the pillars, and there were no base baskets at the foundation. This is the result.”
It was also reported that there was no professional engineer overseeing the project. Instead, the late owner personally supervised the construction work.
“He ignored expert advice,” another resident added. “Sadly, the building gave way, taking his life. Fortunately, some workers managed to escape.”
