U.S. Vice President JD Vance has warned that any peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is unlikely to fully please either side, predicting that both Moscow and Kyiv will end up “unhappy” with the outcome.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said Washington is pushing for a resolution that both countries can at least accept.
“It’s not going to make anybody super happy. Both the Russians and the Ukrainians, probably, at the end of the day, are going to be unhappy with it,” he stated.
His remarks follow President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the three-and-a-half-year war. Trump suggested that Moscow and Kyiv are close to a ceasefire agreement which may require Ukraine to surrender significant territory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy responded on Saturday, stressing that Ukraine’s constitution prohibits giving up land and declaring:
“Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupiers.”
Vance said the U.S. is working to facilitate talks involving Putin, Zelenskiy, and Trump, but argued it would be premature for Putin to meet Zelenskiy before first speaking with Trump.
A White House official later confirmed that Trump remains open to a three-way summit, but preparations are currently focused on the bilateral meeting requested by Putin.
