Nick Cannon Says Having 12 Children Was Tied to Unresolved Trauma

American actor and TV host Nick Cannon has revealed that his decision to father 12 children was closely linked to unresolved personal trauma.

Speaking during an interview on The Breakfast Club, the 43-year-old entertainer admitted that his path into fatherhood was not carefully planned but rather shaped by how he coped with challenges in his past.

“So you think having all those kids was a response to your trauma? Yeah, now that I’m learning that now,” Cannon said.

He explained that following his divorce, instead of pausing to heal and reflect, he distracted himself with a fast-paced lifestyle fueled by money, freedom, and access. “It wasn’t like I set out to go have 12 kids. It was more like, ‘I’m going to live life and have fun. Whatever happens, happens. I can handle it.’ But now, being almost 45, I can look back and realize things might have been different if I had slowed down and thought it through,” he added.

Cannon stressed that each of his children was born from love and meaningful connections but admitted that avoiding inner healing only spread his trauma rather than resolve it.

When asked if his perspective on monogamy had shifted, he replied: “Nah, not really. Monogamy has never really been my thing. I grew up in very unorthodox households, so I’ve always understood that love happens differently.”
