The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to making food security a central national priority, reaffirming its dedication to transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, made this known on Wednesday in Osogbo during the distribution of farm inputs to smallholder farmers. Represented by Ayodele Olawumi, Director of Agricultural Extension in the ministry, Kyari said the government is pursuing wide-ranging reforms aimed at boosting productivity, creating jobs, and reducing the cost of living.
He noted that, alongside economic measures, the Federal Government has launched targeted humanitarian interventions and emergency relief programs to cushion the impact of the ongoing food crisis nationwide.
“President Bola Tinubu has shown unwavering political will and commitment to transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector, with food security positioned as a key pillar of his administration’s priorities,” Kyari stated.
According to him, since 2023, the government has reviewed and restructured agricultural programmes to ensure alignment with the ministry’s core mandates. This process, he said, has led to the implementation of new projects designed to address farmers’ challenges and make food more available, accessible, and affordable for Nigerians.
Kyari added that the distribution of farm inputs fulfills President Tinubu’s pledge to empower farmers and promote local food production — part of a broader strategy to boost output and stabilize prices.
“The ultimate goal of every nation is to achieve food security — a global priority highlighted in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Kyari said. “This administration remains steadfast in advancing agriculture in line with the SDGs.”
He urged beneficiaries to view the initiative as evidence of the government’s dedication to their welfare and to reciprocate by increasing productivity and supporting national food stability.
In his remarks, Taiwo Aiyegoro, the state coordinator of the ministry, commended the initiative as proof of the Federal Government’s continued support for smallholder farmers, describing them as the backbone of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
