Kogi State Polytechnic has launched an investigation into a nine-member syndicate accused of certificate racketeering and document falsification.
Rector Prof. Salisu Ogbo disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday, October 31, in Lokoja. He confirmed that five staff members have been suspended, while four individuals posing as students have been arrested in connection with the alleged forgery scheme.
According to Ogbo, the institution recently uncovered a network involving students, non-students, and corrupt staff who manipulated academic records in violation of institutional procedures.
He revealed that 30 forged original certificates had already been traced to the syndicate.
The suspects allegedly fabricated National Diploma (ND) results under the polytechnic’s name and even attempted to use the fake documents to apply for Higher National Diploma (HND) admission within the same institution.
Ogbo noted that the fraud came to light through intelligence reports and routine checks by the Admissions, ICT, and Security Units. The network reportedly breached security protocols and altered vital security features on official Statements of Result.
He added that some suspects collaborated with result processors to produce results for individuals with multiple carryovers who never completed their exams, falsely presenting them as graduates.
Describing the act as a serious threat to the institution’s integrity, the rector vowed that all culprits would face appropriate sanctions.
Ogbo reassured the public that the polytechnic’s quality assurance and security systems remain intact, stressing that management will continue to root out any misconduct capable of tarnishing its reputation.
