The four-year-old son of former Malumfashi Local Government chairperson in Katsina State, Dayi Maharazu, has been released after spending nine months in the custody of bandits.
The child, Ahmed, was abducted on January 27, 2025, when gunmen attacked Maharazu’s home, killing his police escort before taking the boy.
Katsina journalist Bakatsine confirmed on Tuesday, November 4, that Ahmed has now been safely reunited with his family.
According to a close associate of the former council boss, the attackers arrived in the early hours of the morning, around 1:45 a.m., scaling a neighbour’s fence to gain access to the residence. Only Maharazu’s wife, children, and other relatives were at home at the time.
One of the children spotted the assailants and raised an alarm, prompting some family members to hide in a toilet while their mother secured herself and some of the children in a bedroom. However, two children sleeping in another room were seized.
Mrs. Maharazu managed to contact her husband, who was in Katsina, and he quickly notified the Divisional Police Officer in Malumfashi. Police officers engaged the bandits in a gun duel, rescuing one child, while the gunmen fled with Ahmed.
After nine months, the boy has finally regained his freedom and rejoined his family.
