The House of Representatives has withdrawn its earlier resolution to suspend plenary for one week pending the payment of outstanding debts owed to local contractors by the Federal Government.
During an executive session on Tuesday, lawmakers had criticised the poor implementation of the capital components of the 2024 and 2025 budgets. They also threatened firm action against the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu; and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamsedeen Ogunjimi, if the contractors’ arrears were not cleared within seven days.
However, just hours after issuing the ultimatum, the House reversed its stance. In a statement released by its spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, the lower chamber cited “positive developments arising from engagements and interventions across various levels of government” as the reason for resuming sittings sooner than planned.
According to the statement, the House will reconvene for plenary on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, instead of the previously announced date of next Tuesday.
The announcement, communicated to members via an internal memo from the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, indicated that the early resumption will allow the leadership to brief lawmakers on progress made toward addressing the contractors’ concerns and other pressing national issues.
At Wednesday’s session, the House is expected to formally rescind its earlier adjournment decision and continue legislative proceedings.
The leadership has urged all members to make necessary arrangements to attend.
