Engineer Shyngle Wigwe, father of the late Access Bank CEO Herbert Wigwe, has refuted reports alleging that he is contesting his son’s inheritance with his grandchildren.
Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and their eldest son tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the United States in February 2024.
Recent rumours circulating online suggested a dispute over the late banker’s estate, claiming that the 90-year-old patriarch was battling Herbert’s children for control of his assets.
However, in an interview with NTA, the elder Wigwe strongly dismissed the allegations, saying he has no interest in his son’s wealth.
“How can I be fighting for Herbert’s property? Who is better positioned to protect Herbert’s legacy—his father or a friend? At 90 years old? My grandchildren are there! Please, what would I do with Herbert’s property? How many days do I have left to live?” he said.
He added that he raised Herbert without any external financial assistance and sees no reason to claim any part of his estate.
The grieving father also revealed that he suffered a stroke after his son’s passing. He shared that he had a premonition about Herbert’s death and expressed disapproval of the lavish mansion his son built in Ikoyi, Lagos.
“I visited the new house and I wasn’t happy. It is too ostentatious. I didn’t like it at all. I tried to caution him, but it was already too late. He had started building the house without my knowledge,” he said.
