Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged President Bola Tinubu to take a decisive stand against U.S. President Donald Trump following his threat of possible military action in Nigeria.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Gumi described Trump’s comments as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and called on the Federal Government to issue an immediate response.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign nation with military attack is a grave insult to our authority, but we can rise above it,” he wrote.
He advised President Tinubu to summon the U.S. ambassador to demand a formal retraction of Trump’s remarks. According to Gumi, failure to secure one should prompt Nigeria to consider severing diplomatic ties with Washington.
“President Tinubu should summon the U.S. ambassador; they must withdraw their threats or we break diplomatic relations with this irresponsible regime,” he stated. Gumi also encouraged Nigeria to explore alternative global partners for economic growth and military cooperation, noting that “there are many other options for our economic expansion and military alliances.”
President Trump had on Friday, October 31, designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” in response to the killing of Christians in parts of the country. He warned that the U.S. could deploy troops to protect civilians in affected regions.
