“Smoking Almost Got Me Addicted” — Yemi Alade Reflects on Her Past Struggle with Cigarettes

Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has revealed that she once battled with a brief smoking habit during her university days—an experience she says almost turned into an addiction.

In a recent interview with Chude, the “Johnny” hitmaker explained that curiosity initially pushed her to experiment with smoking while in school. However, it soon became something she found herself relying on, especially before going to bed.

“When I was in university, I tried smoking. It just didn’t work for me. But before it stopped working for me, it worked a little too well,” she said. “I started needing to smoke before going to bed — I was getting addicted to that lifestyle.”

Yemi admitted that she kept the habit hidden, and the secrecy made her realise she didn’t want to continue.

“In public, I would hide the cigarettes, and I told myself, if I have to hide to do something, then I shouldn’t be doing it. I like to be fully aware of my decisions,” she noted.

She said she eventually quit when she realised the potential harm smoking could cause to her voice and overall health, adding that the entire phase lasted less than a year.

“Smoking for me didn’t last up to a year. I stopped because it wasn’t for me, and it could damage my voice,” she said.

Although she sometimes feels tempted like anyone else, Yemi emphasised that she stays committed to her decision, describing herself as someone who sets strict personal boundaries and adheres to them.
