The spokesman of the opposition coalition, Bolaji Abdullahi, has debunked rumours that Labour Party’s Peter Obi has exited the alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in a recent interview with Channels TV, Abdullahi clarified that Obi has been an integral part of the coalition since its formation and continues to actively participate in its activities. However, he noted that Obi has not yet become a registered member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which serves as the coalition’s adopted political platform.
“Peter Obi has been part of the coalition from day one. He has attended almost every meeting of the coalition,” Abdullahi said.
He explained that Obi requested time to conclude certain commitments within the Labour Party, particularly electoral processes involving his supporters, before making a formal switch to ADC.
“The reason Peter Obi has not joined the ADC as a card-carrying member is because he asked for leave to complete the elections his supporters are involved in under the Labour Party,” Abdullahi stated.
He also revealed that the same arrangement was extended to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who is similarly expected to transition to the ADC after fulfilling existing political obligations within his current party.
Abdullahi emphasised that the coalition’s leadership had agreed to this phased integration to ensure a smooth transition and broader unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
