French President Emmanuel Macron files lawsuit against Candace Owens over her remarks suggesting his wife Brigitte may be a man"

French President Emmanuel Macron has filed a defamation lawsuit against conservative media personality Candace Owens over her repeated claims suggesting that his wife, Brigitte Macron, is a man.

The lawsuit accuses Owens of launching a “campaign of global humiliation” for personal profit, citing 22 counts of defamation. According to the complaint, Owens began spreading the claims in March 2025 with a video titled “Is France’s First Lady a Man?”, followed by a series of similar videos and an eight-part podcast called Becoming Brigitte. The suit also alleges she profited by selling merchandise related to the claims.

The Macrons' legal team argues that Owens was provided with credible and verifiable evidence disproving her assertions—including public records, documentation, and direct communication from the couple—but she refused to retract her statements. Instead, they say, she mocked the requests and continued to exploit the story for attention and financial gain.

Among the more extreme allegations Owens has made are that Brigitte Macron stole another woman’s identity, is President Macron’s blood relative, and that the French president was placed in power through a CIA mind-control program like MKUltra. The lawsuit claims these fabrications have caused the couple severe reputational harm, emotional distress, and financial losses due to the need for legal and public relations efforts.

In a joint statement, the Macrons explained their decision to pursue legal action:
Ms Owens’ campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and harm us and our families, and to attract attention. Despite being given multiple opportunities to retract her statements, she refused. We hope this lawsuit sets the record straight and puts an end to this relentless harassment.”

The couple also described the emotional toll the ordeal has taken, stating that they now live under constant public scrutiny based on "profit-driven lies" and are subjected to global ridicule.

According to the Financial Times, the Macrons are prepared to testify in court in Delaware. They are represented by Clare Locke LLP, a prominent defamation law firm known for its successful representation of Dominion Voting Systems in its landmark case against Fox News.

The lawsuit follows three formal retraction demands sent to Owens—all of which she allegedly ignored, using the evidence provided to escalate her attacks, according to a press release from the Macrons’ legal team.
