Kenyan woman Nyambura Mburu has come forward with disturbing allegations of domestic violence she says she endured throughout her 13-year marriage.
In a series of emotional Instagram Stories shared on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Nyambura revealed that her husband, a film and video director, allegedly subjected her to years of physical and emotional abuse.
She posted graphic photos of her injuries, including a red bloodshot eye, severe facial swelling, bruised thighs, and dark marks under her eyes. According to her account, the abuse began early and escalated over the years.
“The man I married broke me,” she wrote. “Beating me up with electric cables, belts, hangers… I walked down the aisle on my wedding day with bruises hidden under makeup.”
Nyambura alleged that the night before their wedding, she was physically assaulted, yet went ahead with the ceremony, masking her pain to protect her abuser and maintain appearances.
She recounted enduring numerous beatings with household items, being cheated on repeatedly, and suffering emotional manipulation—all while raising a family and trying to support her husband’s career.
“I was 19 when you met me. You were nine years older. I became everything you needed—camera operator, assistant, partner—but instead you made me an abuse survivor. You destroyed me,” she continued.
The tipping point came, she said, when he allegedly attacked her while she was pregnant, endangering the lives of their unborn children. The babies were delivered prematurely and placed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), but survived.
“For 13 years I kept smiling while dying behind closed doors… until one day you kicked my babies out of my womb. They ended up in NICU. But they survived you too.”
Nyambura’s testimony has sparked conversations on social media about the hidden struggles many women face in abusive relationships and the importance of speaking out.
As of now, her husband has not responded publicly to the allegations.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, seek help through trusted support services or local authorities.
