President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Originally set to conclude his term on August 31, 2025, Adeniyi will now remain in office until August 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the statement, the extension is intended to allow Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete several key initiatives aligned with the Tinubu administration's policy goals.
These include:
The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service
Full implementation of the National Single Window Project
Advancing Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement read.
“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”
Adeniyi was officially appointed as Comptroller-General in October 2023, after initially assuming the role in an acting capacity following the departure of former CG Hameed Ali in June 2023.
The extension underscores the administration’s commitment to continuity in leadership and the strategic importance of reforming Nigeria’s customs and border management systems.
