NDLEA Officer Fatally Shot During Drug Raid in Ondo

An operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), identified simply as Jide, has been shot dead by suspected drug traffickers in Ondo, the administrative center of Ondo West Local Government Area in Ondo State.

The tragic incident occurred during a sting operation in the early hours of Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at a residence in the Ita’nla area of Ondo town, following intelligence reports about concealed narcotics.

According to a source who spoke with journalists, the NDLEA team had raided the apartment based on information that drugs were hidden in the ceiling.

“It seems they received a tip-off that drugs were stored in the building at Ita’nla. The operatives arrived early in the morning to carry out a raid,” the source stated.

“While some officers entered the house to retrieve the substances, the deceased officer, Jide, remained outside on sentry duty.”

It was reported that a group of hoodlums—believed to be members of the drug syndicate—suddenly appeared and opened fire on Jide.

He was shot in the neck and rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Confirming the incident in a phone interview, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said: “Immediately after the attack, we deployed reinforcement to the area. So far, four key suspects have been apprehended and are now in custody.”

He added that a single-barrel gun was recovered from the suspects, and investigations are ongoing in collaboration with the NDLEA to ensure that all those involved in the deadly assault are brought to justice.
