The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and immediate past Governor of Osun State, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, has announced that he will not be participating in the 2026 governorship election in the state.
Oyetola made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Osogbo on Friday. Addressing party leaders and five declared aspirants, he emphasized that reclaiming power in Osun by 2026 was more important than personal ambition.
“There are qualified, competent aspirants with proven track records contesting under our party. This is a major strength for us. I will not be seeking the APC ticket, but I will continue to support our efforts and complement the federal government on all fronts,” Oyetola stated.
Rumors had earlier suggested he might join the race, but his latest declaration put such speculations to rest. He also encouraged aspirants to conduct their campaigns with decorum and unity.
Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, confirmed on Saturday that Oyetola reiterated his decision not to contest and urged all aspirants to support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate. He also advised party leaders to promote unity and avoid divisive comments.
The aspirants present at the meeting included Mr. Kunle Adegoke, Omooba Dotun Babayemi, Alhaji Bola Oyebamiji, Senator Mudasiru Hussein, and Senator Babajide Omoworare.
