A tragic accident occurred in Lagos when a train fatally struck a dispatch rider who was reportedly attempting to cross the railway track.
According to eyewitnesses, the train could not stop in time and continued its journey after the impact. Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene to control traffic and secure the area. They were later joined by officers from the Shogunle Police Division, while personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the victim’s body.
In a statement, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers of impatience and disregard for safety at railway crossings.
“This is a distressing reminder of the dire consequences of impatience and failure to obey traffic safety rules, especially at railway crossings,” Bakare-Oki said.
He urged dispatch riders and motorists to heed warning signs, traffic lights, and railway signals, stressing that such areas demand extra caution and discipline.
“We appeal to all road users to remain careful, patient, and responsible to prevent avoidable tragedies,” he added.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safety advocacy and public enlightenment, noting that the agency would step up its awareness campaigns and enforcement patrols around high-risk locations.
“We remain dedicated to promoting public awareness, proactive enforcement, and safety consciousness to ensure order and discipline across Lagos,” he stated.
