The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has ruled out any possibility of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing such a move as politically risky.
According to ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, the former Anambra State governor is firmly committed to the opposition coalition being led by the ADC in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Abdullahi, a former PDP stalwart and ex-Minister of Youth and Sports, made the remarks during an appearance on Prime Time, a current affairs programme on Arise Television. He dismissed reports claiming the PDP was making moves to bring Obi back into its fold.
“Let me say clearly, Peter Obi is in the coalition,” Abdullahi stated. “Regardless of what anybody is saying. But it’s interesting to see that the ADC’s involvement has finally spurred the PDP into some form of action.
“However, everyone knows the PDP’s fate is tightly gripped by the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone, understands that returning to the PDP would be too great a risk.”
His comments follow recent praise from Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP and former Minister of Information, who hailed Obi as one of Nigeria’s most credible and capable leaders.
Speaking in an interview on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Gana described Obi as “a symbol of hope” and a crucial figure in the quest for effective governance.
“Peter Obi is one of the finest leaders in this country,” Gana said. “He is disciplined, prudent, and genuinely committed to the Nigerian project. He represents the future of democracy and must be at the forefront of a united opposition.”
Gana also stressed the importance of building a strong coalition of credible opposition leaders, warning that no single party can defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 without a unified front.
