Senator Ireti Kingibe Defects from LP to African Democratic Congress

Senator Ireti Kingibe Defects from LP to African Democratic Congress

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Senate, has formally defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Kingibe described the switch as a strategic and intentional political move, adding that her official induction into the ADC would be celebrated with “noise and fanfare.”

“I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” she said. “As the senator representing the FCT, don’t expect me to just quietly collect a membership card during lunch. I intend to do it with full celebration.”

Addressing concerns about her confidence in the ADC's leadership and the broader political coalition she is joining, Kingibe acknowledged the party’s developmental stage but expressed optimism.

“It’s a growing process. You don’t judge a child who’s still crawling based on how they’ll run. We are evolving,” she explained.

Defending the constitutionality of her defection, Kingibe cited internal divisions within the Labour Party as justification.

“If there weren’t two distinct factions in the Labour Party, I wouldn’t even consider decamping — that would be unconstitutional. But since there are, I have the legal right to move. I’ve chosen to join ADC,” she stated.
