Ohanaeze Accuses Lagos Authorities of Disenfranchising Igbos in LG Elections
Dr. Solomon Ogbonna Aguene, President of the Lagos State chapter of the socio-cultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has accused authorities of disenfranchising Igbo residents in the ongoing local government elections across Lagos State.
Speaking from his residence in Ikoyi, Aguene expressed deep dissatisfaction with the exclusion of Igbo politicians from the voting process and their inability to contest for local government chairmanship and councillorship positions.
“Do you know that Igbo residents in Lagos are routinely denied the right to vote? This is not unique to this election cycle; it happens every time. Despite our significant contributions to the state’s economic and political development, we are unfairly marginalized,” Aguene said.
He acknowledged that only a handful of Igbo individuals hold vice-chairmanship roles in local governments, but insisted this representation is grossly inadequate.
“This situation undermines democracy, which should guarantee equity, justice, and fairness. What we see instead are opportunists seizing power and ruling without regard for the people. Voter apathy in Lagos and across Nigeria stems from the frustration of repeatedly voting for such opportunists,” he added.
Aguene also highlighted the critical economic role played by the Igbo community in Lagos and urged for greater inclusion in governance. He lamented the broader state of governance in Nigeria, noting the hardships faced by the working class, including journalists and security personnel, who struggle to provide for their families.
“The governance system is skewed towards a privileged few while many Nigerians suffer,” he concluded.
