Tragic Collision at Lagos-Ogun Border Claims Woman’s Life Due to Speeding Truck

A tragic accident occurred at Ita Oluwo, along the Lagos-Ogun State border, when a speeding Iveco truck experienced brake failure and crashed into a stationary truck, resulting in the death of a woman trapped and crushed between the two vehicles.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, on Saturday.

According to the agency, the crash involved two Iveco trucks loaded with iron rods, registered as QX 189 KSF and YA 701 AAA. The accident was reportedly caused by a mechanical failure—specifically, brake failure on the moving truck—which led to the collision and trapped the woman between the vehicles.

Emergency responders quickly extricated the victim from the wreckage and transported her to the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital morgue in Sagamu.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the crash, describing it as a preventable tragedy caused by mechanical negligence and reckless driving.

“This heartbreaking incident underscores the urgent need for strict adherence to road safety regulations, especially by operators of heavy-duty trucks carrying hazardous or dense cargo,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He lamented that accidents like this, which can be avoided through proper vehicle maintenance and responsible driving, continue to occur due to negligence and speeding.

Expressing concern over the frequency of such incidents, Bakare-Oki urged haulage companies to enforce regular mechanical inspections and ensure drivers meet stringent certification and health standards.

“Operating large vehicles without proper maintenance or safety compliance endangers public safety. Routine roadworthiness checks must be mandatory and non-negotiable,” he emphasized.

The rescue operation was a joint effort involving LASTMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force.
