A devastating windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has claimed four lives and destroyed 1,637 mud houses across Yobe State since May 9.
Dr. Muhammad Goje, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), made this known to journalists in Damaturu on Thursday.
According to Goje, the disaster impacted seven local government areas: Bursari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Gulani, Potiskum, and Tarmuwa.
He revealed that 92 people sustained varying degrees of injuries, while a total of 5,022 individuals from 1,264 households were affected. Additionally, 83 households, comprising 368 individuals, were displaced. A total of 48 communities were hit by the storm, with Fika being the worst affected.
In response, Goje said YOSEMA, in collaboration with Action Against Hunger (ACF) and with support from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), provided life-saving relief items to 566 households in Fika and Potiskum.
A joint assessment carried out by SEMA and ACF focused on identifying the most vulnerable families—those who lost their homes and essential belongings and who were in dire need of hygiene support.
Goje added that Mohammed Kingimi, WASH Project Manager at ACF, confirmed the organisation’s readiness to offer further assistance based on available resources.
“ACF is also preparing to implement Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) support for the same 566 households to aid their recovery,” he said.
Goje reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities through proactive and timely emergency interventions.
