Abia to Host First Para Badminton International, All Africa Championships

Abia State is set to host two major para badminton tournaments—the maiden Abia Para Badminton International and the All Africa Para Badminton Championships—from September 30 to October 5, and October 6 to 12 respectively, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The events, endorsed by the Badminton World Federation and the Badminton Confederation of Africa, mark the first time such high-profile para badminton competitions will be staged in the state.

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, who chairs the main organising committee, credited the vision and support of Governor Alex Otti for making the championships possible.

“The hosting of these championships is more than a sporting milestone—it’s a statement of our capacity, hospitality, and vision,” Emetu said. “It shows Abia is not only a sports destination in Nigeria, but also a proud member of the global badminton family.”

He emphasised that Governor Otti’s administration prioritises sports, inclusion, and opportunity, noting that para sports embody “resilience, courage, and the triumph of the human spirit.”

Over 224 athletes from 16 countries are expected to participate, alongside coaches, officials, and fans from across Africa and beyond—a turnout Emetu believes will boost Abia’s economy, tourism, transport, and small businesses.

“Let us fill the stands, cheer our athletes, and protect the positive image of Abia State,” he urged. “To our para athletes—you are already champions in the eyes of Abia State.”

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, praised the governor for providing logistics, including a wheelchair-accessible bus for athletes’ transportation. He also commended the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, led by Francis Orbih, for its technical expertise and partnership.

National Coordinator of the Para Badminton Federation and 2nd Vice President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Ekeoma Samuel, confirmed that preparations are in top gear, with strong international interest already secured.
