Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the 2027 presidential ambition of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, describing it as “dead on arrival.”
Wike, speaking during a Channels Television interview on Tuesday night in Abuja, said Amaechi would be the last person considered for his party’s presidential ticket.
He recalled Amaechi’s poor track record in previous elections, insisting that the former Rivers State governor had repeatedly suffered defeat despite holding influential positions.
“The last person they will give a ticket to is Amaechi. That is dead on arrival. In 2014 and 2015, when he was governor, we defeated him. In 2019, as Minister and Director-General of Buhari’s campaign, we still defeated him. Even in 2023, when he backed another candidate, he lost. So how does he now claim the capacity to win?” Wike asked.
Wike further mocked Amaechi’s boast of knowing President Bola Tinubu’s weaknesses, stressing that his political history shows he lacks the strength to actualize a presidential bid, even under a different platform.
On the grievances of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, Wike claimed Lawal was embittered because Tinubu overlooked him for the vice-presidential slot.
“His anger was that he thought Mr. President would have chosen him as the vice-presidential candidate. Having not done that, heaven would have to let loose. He wanted to become vice president; that is very obvious,” Wike said.
The FCT Minister also cautioned former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, to clear his name before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) instead of politicizing his invitation by the anti-graft agency.
