Champions League: Mourinho Knocks Out Van Persie’s Feyenoord

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce have booked their spot in the Champions League playoff round after staging a dramatic comeback to eliminate Robin van Persie’s Feyenoord on Tuesday.

The Turkish side trailed 2-1 from the first leg in the Netherlands and looked in deeper trouble when Tsuyoshi Watanabe put Feyenoord ahead in the 41st minute of the return fixture in Istanbul.

But Mourinho’s men struck twice before halftime and went on to seal an emphatic 5-2 victory on the night, progressing 6-4 on aggregate.

Fenerbahce will now face Benfica, who defeated Nice in their qualifier, in next week’s playoff first leg — with a place in the lucrative new 36-team Champions League league phase on the line.
