Liverpool to Honour Diogo Jota at EPL Opener, ‘Forever 20’ Shirt Launched

Liverpool will kick off their Premier League title defence tonight against Bournemouth in what promises to be an emotional occasion at Anfield, as the club pays tribute to the late Diogo Jota.

It will be the Reds’ first league match since Jota and his brother, André Silva, tragically lost their lives in a road accident in July. Jota’s wife, children, and extended family will be present for the ceremony, which will take place ahead of the 8pm BST kick-off.

In his pre-match programme notes, manager Arne Slot acknowledged the significance of the moment.

“This will be a very emotional night, being our first league game since losing Diogo and André,” Slot wrote. “The tributes from across the football world, especially within the LFC family, have been incredibly moving. Tonight, we come together once more to honour them.

I believe Diogo’s wife, children and family will be here, and as a club, we must show that our love and support for them will always remain.”

Focus on the Match

While the evening will carry deep emotion, Slot stressed the importance of the footballing task ahead. Bournemouth, who finished ninth last season, arrive with a strong squad under manager Andoni Iraola.

“There’s nothing like Anfield under the lights,” Slot said. “We’re excited to start our campaign, but Bournemouth are a quality side, and we must be at our best.”

Reflecting on pre-season, Slot praised his team’s attacking progress but called for greater defensive discipline, noting last season’s success often came from narrow wins and clean sheets. He also highlighted the positive impact of summer signings Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Milos Kerkez.

Slot ended with a rallying cry to the fans:

“Your support is never taken for granted. It will be vital again as we aim to defend our title.”

‘Forever 20’ Tribute

Liverpool have also unveiled a commemorative “Forever 20” T-shirt in Jota’s honour. The design features an image of him making his trademark heart gesture, lyrics from his fan chant, and the words Forever 20.

All profits will go to the LFC Foundation to fund a grassroots football programme in Jota’s name. Following discussions with his family, the club has retired the number 20 shirt across all levels, including LFC Women and the Academy.

Fans can also have Diogo J. 20 printed on their shirts, with all printing profits going towards the same initiative.
