The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has indicated that it may soon approve a salary increase for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, and members of the National Assembly.
RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, arguing that the current pay structure for top political office holders is outdated and unrealistic.
He noted that salaries for these positions have remained unchanged since 2008 despite rising economic challenges and expanded responsibilities.
“You cannot pay the President of Nigeria ₦1.5 million monthly in a country of over 200 million people and expect it to be taken seriously,” Shehu said.
“A CBN governor or director-general earns ten times more than the President, while some heads of agencies receive up to twenty times what the Attorney-General of the Federation is paid. That is absolutely not right.”
However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the proposal, warning that it would be unjust to raise salaries for politicians at a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with inflation, job losses, and poverty.
