LAUTECH Confirms Killing of 300-Level Student During Sign-Out Ceremony

The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the death of one of its students during a sign-out ceremony in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The victim, identified as Babalola Marvelous Olanrewaju, a 300-level Mechanical Engineering student, was shot during the event at the Ultramodern Wazo Market on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, Registrar Olayinka O. Balogun described the incident as “deeply saddening,” noting that the university had banned sign-out activities on campus and in surrounding hotels since 2023. Despite the prohibition, a group of students reportedly held the ceremony at the market’s football pitch, where the shooting occurred.

Preliminary findings suggest that Olanrewaju was shot at the venue, left on his motorbike, and collapsed shortly afterward. The Acting Dean of Student Affairs contacted the Oyo State Police Command immediately, leading to the deployment of officers from the Monitoring Unit and Area Command.

A search of the victim’s bag enabled the university to confirm his identity. His body was taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue, and his family has been informed.

“The university is cooperating fully with the police as investigations continue,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. May God grant him eternal rest.”
