Police in Bauchi State have detained a young man, Usman Sabo, following Facebook posts in which he criticized the Chairman of Shira Local Government Area, Babangida Ishaq, also known as “Maliya.”
According to Daily Trust, Sabo was arrested on Friday by officers from the GRA Police Division and taken to Bauchi. A family source said his posts accused the chairman of neglecting the local government’s football team and delaying workers’ salaries. Another source suggested the arrest was politically motivated, noting Sabo is a member of the APC while Ishaq belongs to the PDP.
In his posts, Sabo alleged that Ishaq failed to sponsor the Shira LG team in the Kaura Unity Cup, delayed July salaries, and sought to evict government workers from staff housing. One post read: “Power is transient… It is wrong to oppress people just because we are their leaders.”
Lawyer Mukhtar Muhammad condemned the arrest as “oppression” and accused the police of acting as “attack dogs for corrupt leaders.”
Responding, Ishaq said Sabo was arrested for spreading falsehoods to damage his reputation. He claimed he had donated ₦500,000 and arranged transport for the football team, but they were unable to attend the tournament.
On housing, he said non-indigene directors given two months’ notice would have rent covered for two years. Regarding salaries, he said only absent staff were withheld pay after ghost worker verification — including PDP members’ relatives.
