Sean Kingston sentenced to 3.5 years in U.S. federal prison for wire fraud

Singer Sean Kingston has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison after being convicted in a wire fraud case. The judgment was handed down on Friday, August 15, in a Florida courtroom, months after Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, were found guilty of defrauding businesses of over $1 million.

The 34-year-old artist faced a maximum of six years but received a mid-range sentence between what his defense team and prosecutors requested. His lawyers had argued for a two-to-two-and-a-half-year term, citing his clean record and community contributions, while prosecutors pushed for a punishment closer to the maximum.

Ultimately, the judge sentenced Kingston to three and a half years. Turner, meanwhile, was sentenced to five years in March.

According to court records, Kingston and Turner obtained jewelry, luxury cars, and other goods by claiming to have wired payments that were never completed, while keeping the items.

Beyond the prison term, Kingston is also required to repay his victims. His lawyers asked the court to consider home confinement so he could earn money through his music to put toward restitution, but the request was denied.

Upon release, Kingston will be placed under supervised conditions, including drug testing, DNA submission, and maintaining lawful employment of at least 30 hours weekly. His probation officer will also be permitted to make unannounced visits to his home or other locations.

Kingston is scheduled to return to court on October 16 for a hearing on victim restitution.
