Former Barcelona star Dani Alves becomes church preacher seven months after rape conviction overturned on appeal (Video)

Former Barcelona and Brazil football legend Dani Alves has reportedly embraced a new calling as a church preacher, just seven months after his conviction for rape was overturned on appeal.

The 42-year-old, one of the most decorated footballers in history, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February 2024 after a court found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Catalan nightclub in 2022.

However, Alves was later released on bail while his legal team appealed the ruling. In March 2025, the Catalan High Court acquitted him, citing “inconsistencies and contradictions” in the prosecution’s case.

Since regaining his freedom, Alves appears to have dedicated his life to faith and service. A recent video shows him passionately preaching to a congregation at a church in Girona, near Barcelona.

“You must have faith, my brothers. I am living proof of that,” Alves said during his sermon. “What God promises, He fulfills. In the midst of the storm, a messenger of God appeared and led me to the Church. Today, I stand here because of Him. I asked God to protect my home and those who never abandoned me — and I promise to serve Him.”

During his legal battle, Alves’s wife, Joana Sanz, a 33-year-old model, had announced their separation after initially standing by him. She was even seen celebrating on social media shortly after his conviction.

But following his acquittal, the couple reportedly reconciled. According to Spanish entertainment outlet Vanitatis, they recently welcomed their first child together, a baby boy.
