Police Inspector, Three Others Killed in Multiple-Truck Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

At least four people, including a police inspector, have died and several others were injured in a multiple-truck accident on the Kara Bridge, inward Mowe, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway early Thursday morning.

The fatal crash involved five articulated trucks, causing heavy traffic gridlock and extensive damage to property.

Confirming the incident during a visit to the scene, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, said emergency teams worked through the night to rescue victims and clear the wreckage.“We recorded a multiple-vehicle crash at the Ogun-Lagos border involving five articulated trucks. So far, three people have been rescued,” he stated.

Jimoh added that emergency responders, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and other security agencies, were on the ground from as early as 5 a.m.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was triggered by a trailer that suffered brake failure, causing a chain collision.

“One of the trailers failed to brake, which led to this tragic accident. It’s a reminder for all drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance,” Jimoh said.

Tragically, the Commissioner confirmed the death of a police inspector who was part of the advance response team deployed to manage the situation.

“It’s very unfortunate that we lost one of our officers who came with the rescue team to control the scene,” he lamented.

Jimoh also cautioned motorists—especially truck drivers—against reckless driving, describing it as a major cause of fatal highway accidents.

“We appeal to all articulated vehicle drivers to avoid reckless driving. Such negligence continues to claim innocent lives,” he warned.

Rescue operations involving the police, FRSC, LASTMA, and other agencies were still ongoing as of press time, with efforts focused on removing the burnt trucks and restoring free traffic flow.
