Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has called on the factional acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Abdulrahman, to focus on peacebuilding and reconciliation as his first order of business.
Fayose made the appeal while congratulating Abdulrahman on his appointment, stressing that the party urgently needs clear direction.
Abdulrahman assumed the role of acting National Chairman following the suspension of Umar Damagum by the Sam Anyanwu-led faction.
His emergence came after the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) suspended Anyanwu; the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade; Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha; and National Organising Secretary, Umaru Bature, for one month, in line with a court ruling that halted the party’s planned national convention.
Commenting on the ongoing leadership tussle, Fayose said Abdulrahman’s appointment presents a chance for the PDP to regain its footing and rebuild trust among members nationwide.
“I congratulate the new chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman. I urge him to unite the party and restore confidence in its members.
“There is no better time to give the PDP a new direction than now. The party must heal from within if it hopes to reclaim its place in Nigeria’s political landscape,” he told journalists in Ekiti.
Fayose further urged the new chairman to address what he termed “injustices and irregularities” affecting some state chapters, including Ekiti, in accordance with the party’s constitution and relevant court rulings.
