A federal paternity lawsuit against rapper Jay-Z has been dismissed with prejudice, ending a long-running legal battle initiated by Rymir Satterthwaite, who has claimed for years to be the music mogul’s son.
According to Page Six, a California judge on Wednesday granted Jay-Z’s request to dismiss the case filed earlier this year through Satterthwaite’s legal guardian and paralegal, Lillie Coley. The ruling bars Satterthwaite, 30, from filing another lawsuit or seeking a paternity test from the rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter.
Satterthwaite has long alleged that Carter fathered him in the 1990s after a relationship with his late mother, Wanda Satterthwaite. Jay-Z has consistently denied the claim.
In July, Satterthwaite announced on Instagram that he had withdrawn the federal case, saying there was “a lot going on behind closed doors.” He insisted, however, that he had not given up his pursuit, adding, “We got to step back and play chess, not checkers.”
Carter’s attorneys have repeatedly dismissed the allegations as baseless, describing the decades-long legal efforts as “harassment.” Court documents state that the claims have been “addressed—and rejected—in multiple other courts.”
While Satterthwaite denied seeking back child support, he claimed his lawsuit was aimed at obtaining damages for reputational and emotional distress. He also accused Carter of committing fraud, misrepresenting facts, and manipulating court procedures to suppress his paternity claim.
In May 2023, Satterthwaite sought a court order to compel Carter—father to Blue Ivy, 13, and twins Rumi and Sir, 8, with wife Beyoncé—to take a DNA test. At the time, he vowed to continue fighting, telling the Daily Mail: “This is not going to be over until justice is served… I won’t stop fighting for this until I win.”
Jay-Z’s legal team responded firmly, stating that the courts had already reviewed and rejected the allegations and expected the same outcome for any future filings.
Satterthwaite, who is also an aspiring rapper, said his mother first told him Carter was his father when he was eight years old. Before her death in 2016, Wanda filed a civil suit in New Jersey seeking child support from Carter, but the case was dismissed because it was filed in the wrong jurisdiction. It was not revisited until Coley and Satterthwaite renewed the filings in 2014.
