President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on training facilities used by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies, citing their deteriorated and outdated condition.
The announcement was made by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc Committee on the overhaul of security training institutions, during an inspection tour of facilities in Lagos.
Governor Mbah was accompanied by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the committee’s secretary and former Inspector General of Police Alkali Usman Baba, and Assistant Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, who heads the Special Protection Unit (SPU). He noted that the committee has been given 30 days to present a detailed report to NEC.
According to Mbah, President Tinubu expressed deep concern that security personnel entrusted with protecting citizens and upholding human dignity are still being trained in outdated environments.
He stated that the directive was issued during the last NEC meeting on October 23, adding that the condition of the training institutions “does not align with the President’s vision of growing Nigeria’s economy to one trillion dollars within the next five years,” underscoring the urgent need for modernization.
