Green Card holders with a criminal record may have their residency revoked and face deportation - US says

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Tuesday, July 8, that lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) with criminal records risk having their status revoked and being deported from the United States.

In a notice addressing Green Card holders, the agency emphasized its commitment to “protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders, and enhancing the nation’s economic security.”

“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not qualify you as a law-abiding lawful permanent resident,” the statement read.

CBP underscored that holding a Green Card is a privilege, not a right, and the government retains the authority to revoke it if the holder has a criminal past.

“Possessing a Green Card is a privilege, not a right. Under U.S. law, the government can revoke your Green Card if these laws are violated or abused.

Furthermore, lawful permanent residents arriving at a U.S. port of entry with prior criminal convictions may face mandatory detention in addition to removal proceedings,” the agency warned.
