The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has formally lodged a petition with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), demanding the suspension of Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa for allegedly failing to award a crucial penalty in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
According to Morocco World News, the FRMF cited “refereeing injustices” in their complaint, arguing that Twanyanyukwa’s decisions had a significant impact on the outcome of the match.
The controversy stems from an incident in the 82nd minute when the game was tied 2-2. Twanyanyukwa initially awarded Morocco a penalty, suspecting a handball by Nigeria’s Oluwatosin Demehin.
However, after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), she overturned the call, ruling that Demehin’s arm was close to her body and not in an unnatural position.
Shortly afterward, Nigeria’s Jennifer Echegini scored what proved to be the winning goal, sealing a 3-2 victory for the Super Falcons.
