Two United Airlines Planes Collide on Tarmac at Chicago O’Hare Airport

Two United Airlines aircraft made contact on the ground at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when one plane’s wing clipped the tail of another while taxiing, officials have confirmed.

According to United Airlines, Flight 2652—arriving from Jackson Hole, Wyoming—was taxiing toward its gate when its right wing struck the horizontal stabilizer of another United plane that was stationary on the tarmac.

A United spokesperson said all 113 passengers and five crew members aboard Flight 2652 deplaned safely, and no injuries were reported. The second aircraft had no passengers at the time of the incident.

Passenger Bill Marcus, who was on Flight 2652, said he initially didn’t realize a collision had occurred. “I was shocked that I didn’t feel something more,” he told reporters. “When they separated the planes, there was a bit of shuddering.”

Marcus explained that the pilot had announced a short delay “to document something,” but it wasn’t until passengers saw airport staff gathering outside that they realized what had happened. “That’s when I saw the right wing had clipped the rear stabilizer of another plane,” he said.

He commended the flight crew’s professionalism, noting, “Everyone stayed calm. It did make me think twice about how these things happen. Is it an FAA issue or a local taxiing situation? I’ve never experienced anything like it, and I fly quite often.”

Passengers were delayed for roughly 40 minutes before disembarking.

United Airlines has not provided further details about the cause of the collision, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has yet to comment.
