Renowned Chinese entertainer Zhang Yiyang has been executed by firing squad following his conviction for the brutal murder of his underage girlfriend.
Zhang made history as the first Chinese celebrity to be executed by firing squad, with the Intermediate People’s Court of Xianyang in North Shaanxi Province publicly confirming the execution in July 2025.
According to court records, the execution took place on December 18, 2024. Zhang had fatally attacked his 16-year-old girlfriend in 2022, stabbing her in the neck and severing her carotid artery, jugular vein, trachea, and esophagus—injuries that led to her death from massive bleeding.
The two began dating in September 2021, but their relationship deteriorated, leading to a breakup attempt by the victim after a dispute.
Following the murder, Zhang fled with the victim’s phone and attempted to destroy evidence by discarding the weapon and related items in a reservoir. The next day, he reportedly tried to take his own life in a hotel but was found by a staff member who alerted authorities.
Zhang Yiyang was known for several hit songs, including “I Only Care About People Who Care About Me,” “So Care About You,” and “Crying Man.”
