In a captivating Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) showdown on Saturday, Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a remarkable second-half comeback to claim a dramatic 3–2 victory over Morocco.
The North Africans started strongly, stunning the Nigerian side with two early goals. Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 12th minute, and Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead just 12 minutes later, giving Morocco a comfortable 2–0 advantage by the 24th minute.
But the Super Falcons weren’t done yet.
After the break, Nigeria emerged with renewed energy and purpose. Esther Okoronkwo sparked the revival with a confidently taken penalty in the 64th minute. Just seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi struck the equalizer, swinging momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favor.
With the clock ticking down, Jennifer Echegini delivered the decisive blow, scoring the match-winner in the 88th minute to complete the turnaround and send Nigerian fans into celebration.
Statistically, Nigeria held the upper hand. They registered 14 shots to Morocco’s 10, with five on target, and enjoyed 55% possession. The Super Falcons also recorded 280 completed passes with a 69% accuracy rate, and earned five corners to Morocco’s three.
Despite the intensity of the contest, the match remained clean and disciplined—no yellow or red cards were shown. Nigeria committed seven fouls, while Morocco had 12.
