DSS, NIA Monitoring Politicians Sponsoring Insurgency – Defence Chief Musa

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are actively tracking politicians suspected of sponsoring insurgency in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday night, Musa said security agencies are also pursuing terrorism financiers, with several cases already in different stages of prosecution.

“The process of naming and prosecuting terror financiers is ongoing. The Attorney General, DSS, NIA, and other agencies are working tirelessly. Some of these sponsors have international links, so it takes time and legal precision,” he explained.

The Defence Chief lamented that the military often risks lives to capture high-profile terror suspects, only for them to be freed on legal technicalities.

“You risk your life, arrest a terror suspect, and hand them over. Then they are released due to loopholes in court. It is demoralising,” he said.

Musa called for the creation of special courts or tribunals dedicated to handling terrorism-related cases, stressing the need for stronger laws to deter offenders.

“We need laws that send a clear message. In other countries, once you are linked to terrorism, it is over. Here, we treat it with kid gloves,” he noted.

He further highlighted the wider regional crisis fueling insecurity in Nigeria, citing the collapse of Libya and the ongoing conflict in Sudan as major sources of arms proliferation and the influx of foreign fighters into the country.
