FG Shuts Down Over 13.5 Million Social Media Accounts for Code Violations

The Federal Government, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has deactivated 13,597,057 social media accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for posting offensive content and violating Nigeria’s Code of Practice for online platforms.

The crackdown followed the submission of the 2024 Compliance Report by major service providers, including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

Despite the scale of the enforcement, NITDA commended the platforms for their cooperation and commitment to Nigeria’s regulatory framework, which was developed in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Key figures from the 2024 report include:

Registered complaints: 754,629

Harmful content removed: 58,909,112

Content restored after appeal: 420,439

Accounts deactivated: 13,597,057

According to NITDA, the figures reflect ongoing efforts to protect users, promote responsible digital engagement, and curb harmful online behavior in line with national laws.

The agency reiterated that all online platforms operating in Nigeria must be locally registered, comply with tax obligations, and strictly adhere to the Code of Practice.

It further assured that it will continue collaborating with regulators, industry players, and civil society to enhance user safety, digital literacy, and transparency across Nigeria’s digital space.
